22nd Braunschweig International Film Festival

2008-07-31

November 4-9, 2008 Founded in 1986, Braunschweig International filmfest is the oldest festival

in Lower Saxony, Northern Germany. Started by a handful of cinema
enthousiasts it has developed into an audience festival for 22,000 visitors.
Around 280 film industry professionals – filmmakers, actors, producers,
composers, press – attend the festival to see about 170 full-length and
short films on six screens.

Programme
Young European cinema of the high standard is one of the trademarks of
Braunschweig’s International filmfest. International premières, cinéma
d’auteurs, film concerts, retrospectives, tributes and four awards round off
the filmfest’s profile, giving the audience and the press ample scope for
new discoveries.

European Actors Award »The Europa«
With the European Actors Award »THE EUROPA« the filmfest honors an actress
or actor for his or her outstanding artistic performances and contribution
to European film culture. In addition to the prize money of 10.000 Euros
donated by main sponsor Volkswagen Financial Services, a bronze statue
called EUROPA, will be awarded.

European Competition »The Heinrich«
Young, European, and of a high standard: these are the qualities rewarded by
the Heinrich Prize, the audience prize which was first awarded in 1999. This
award of € 10,000, kindly donated by the Volkswagen Bank, is for first and
second works of young European directors. The money is equally divided
between the director and the distributor or producer to support distribution
in Germany.

»KINEMA« French-German youth award for debut films
Since 2007 a jury of five young French and German adults have selected the
winner who receives a 35mm print of his or her film with French/German
subtitles. The award highlights the film cultural exchange between Lower
Saxony and the French region Haute-Normandie that filmfest started in 2001.

Music and Film
The International filmfest Braunschweig is one of few European festivals who
draw attention to the close relationship between film and music, thus
devoting itself to a long neglected aspect of cinema history and culture.
Portraits of film composers, a music master class and silent films with
musical accompaniment with new compositions will be presented. „Music and
Film“ is a series combining pleasure both for eye and ear which is sure to
please both film and music fans. In 2008, internationally acclaimed composer
Michael Nyman will be the festival’s guest of honour.

The Short Film Music Prize »The Leo«
Since 2003 the Leo is being awarded for the best combination of image and
sound in a short film. Based on a jury decision, the prize of € 2,000 will
be rewarded equally to the director and the composer.
